Construction Update as of July 10, 2001
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY UPDATE
Period 10 July - 23 July 2001
WORK AREAS:
- Dupont--Temporary North Entrance. · Ceiling grid will be
installed during the week of 7/16/01. · The aluminum entrance
will be installed during the week of 7/16/01. · The exterior
entrance ramp and handrail are complete. The North Entrance is on
schedule for opening on 8/1/01.
- Dupont--Lecture Hall Asbestos abatement was completed. ·
Floor tile removal will begin in the restrooms adjacent to the
Dupont Lecture Hall on Tuesday, 12 June. Removal of the mastic
will require use of the citrus-based product. · The Bertoia
sculpture outside the Lecture Hall will be relocated temporarily
to the McCabe Terrace prior to the start of demolition. ·
Saw-cutting of structural members will occur at the end of July in
preparation for demolishing the Lecture Hall wing.
- Dupont--Math Wing · Asbestos abatement will be
coordinated with the relocation of the Mathematics &
Statistics Department. The scheduled start date is 27 July. ·

preparation for demolishing the Math wing.
- Dupont Physics Offices and Temporary Restrooms · Interior
walls have been removed. · Layout and framing of new walls
will start the week of 7/16/01. The exit doors at that lobby will
be permanently blocked after 8/1/01.
- Rugby Field · A stone surfaced temporary by-pass road
will be installed this week through the field. This road will be
the public access to the Dupont parking lot. The existing access
road alongside the Research Annex will be closed and removed the
week of 7/16/01. · Stockpiling of topsoil and fill is
ongoing. Construction of the swale is underway.
- North Quad · The pedestrian path between Martin and
Cornell has been rerouted. Please follow the pathway delineated by
orange construction fencing. Temporary signs directing pedestrians
to Cornell Library will be installed shortly. · The
installation of manhole 13 will affect the landscape, parking and
access roads at Hicks and Beardsley. A coordination meeting with
the departments occupying those two buildings will be held the
week of 16 July.
- Cornell Library · Installation of utilities in the former
garden between Cornell and Martin is underway. The temporary
entrance to Cornell is on schedule for opening 1 August. ·
Structural steel will be installed in the second floor of Cornell
to allow the removal of the canopy. This work is targeted for the
end of July. A coordination meeting with the Library staff will be
held 17 July.
UTILITY SHUTDOWNS:
- The Cornell Library domestic water supply and sanitary drain
lines will be shut down during the week of 7/16/01 for
approximately one day. The shutdown will be coordinated through
Maintenance.
- The fire alarm riser in Dupont at the temporary North Entrance
will be shut down on 16 July to allow rerouting of this service.
PEDESTRIAN / VEHICULAR ACCESS:
- Parking along Whittier Place is prohibited during the hours of
7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Faculty and staff were
advised that parking is at their own risk. The purple permit
parking signs on Whittier Place will be removed.
- The stair tower exit door at the northwest corner of the
Dupont Research Annex has been limited to emergency exit only, due
to construction activities outside. Signs have been posted at all
doors in the stair tower.
- Installation of the construction fence on the North Quad is
nearly complete. Opaque slats will be installed in the fence by 1
September to screen the view of construction.
- The pedestrian path between Cornell Library and Martin
Building has been rerouted. Please follow the alternate path,
delineated by the orange construction fencing.
- The stair tower exit on the west side of Dupont was closed 11
July for approximately 10 days, for excavation and the
installation of the temporary stair and scaffold assembly. Signs
have been posted inside the building to this effect.
- The Borough has approved eliminating parking at two spaces on
Elm Avenue near the intersection with Whittier Place, to
facilitate construction traffic. The existing street parking signs
will be relocated. Borough enforcement of the restriction will
begin in August (after a period of public notice).
NOISE, VIBRATION, DUST:
- Excavation work is underway between Cornell and Martin.
Excavation on the west side of Dupont will produce similar amounts
of dust and noise.
- Use of the citrus-based mastic remover as part of the asbestos
abatement activities will produce an odor in Dupont. Negative
pressure and high rates of ventilation are being used to help
dissipate the odor.
- Saw-cutting at the Lecture Hall wing and the Math wing at the
end of July will last for approximately three days. There will be
significant noise and vibration associated with this operation.
- Clearing of the Chiller Plant site will begin the week of 23
July.
CONSTRUCTION DELIVERIES / HEAVY EQUIPMENT ON SITE:
- Earth-moving equipment (backhoe, bulldozer, dump truck, etc.)
is on site; there will be additional deliveries of heavy equipment
over the next one to two weeks.
