Construction
Update as of August 15, 2002
Period 16 to 29 August
2002
UTILITY SHUTDOWNS:
- No major shutdowns are planned in the next two weeks.
WORK AREAS:
Cornell Library
- Construction has been substantially completed on the second
floor. The book shelves have been reinstalled and re-shelving of
the collection is complete. The stair at the northeast corner of
Cornell will be reopened next week. The sprinkler system
activated.
Cornell Addition (a.k.a. Biology/ Commons Wing)
- Mechanical services are roughed-in on the second floor and are
continuing at the lower level and in the 200-seat Lecture Hall.
The architectural concrete columns will be sand-blasted during the
next two weeks. This work will occur from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
daily and possibly on Saturdays (except 8/17). There will be
noise and dust generated by this operation. The footings and
foundations for the new 40-seat classroom are on-going.
Chiller Plant
- Mechanical piping and electrical services are being installed.
The roof is being installed.
Chemistry/Astronomy Wing
- Elevated concrete decks are completed. Rough-in of mechanical
and electrical services is starting now.
SITEWORK:
- Chilled water piping installation along the east side of
Beardsley Hall will be complete by 8/16. The new sidewalk along
the east side of Beardsley will be installed during the week of
8/19 and re-opened the following week. Pedestrian traffic remains
temporarily re-routed around the front of Trotter.
- Two additional trenches are being cut on the North Quad to
complete sanitary and data line tie-ins outside the construction
fence. The work area is enclosed in orange snow fence.
PEDESTRIAN / VEHICULAR ACCESS:
- The sidewalk along the east side of Beardsley remains closed
to pedestrians and will reopen on 8/26 after the paving is
completed. The entrance to Beardsley will be usable in case of an
emergency. The North Quad entrance to Beardsley will remain
open.
- There will be intermittent traffic blockages on the service
drive behind Dupont Bldg. over the next two weeks while
underground utilities are connected to the Chiller Plant.
- Deliveries of concrete block, reinforcing steel, concrete and
stone will be on-going.
- Parking along Whittier Place is prohibited during the hours of
7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- The construction work force has increased due to other
projects on north campus. Thank you for your cooperation in
respecting the areas designated as Construction Parking by using
the rugby and Dupont parking lots.
NOISE, VIBRATION, DUST, ODORS
- There will be some noise from delivery trucks and saws
throughout this period. There will also be noise and dust
generated by the sand-blasting operation in the late afternoons
and early evenings. The noise is not expected to be disruptive to
nearby buildings.
- Expect deliveries of reinforcing steel, concrete and masonry
throughout this period to generate dust on-site.
- There will be some dust generated by the on-going trenching
for the chilled water lines at Beardsley and by extremely dry site
conditions.
