Construction
Update as of October 18, 2001
Period 16 - 29 October
2001
UTILITY SHUTDOWNS:
- There will be one more interruption to the water service on
most of the north campus on Saturday, October 27th. Service is
expected to be restored by 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Affected
buildings include: Beardsley, Cornell Library, Courtney Smith
House, Dupont, Hicks, Lang Music, Martin, Pearson, Papazian,
Swarthmore Friends Meetinghouse, Trotter, 510-512 Elm Avenue, and
all of the houses on Whittier Place. Impact and disruption will be
similar to what what experienced on Saturday, October
6th.
WORK AREAS:
Dupont Research Annex
- Temporary partitions will be installed along the exterior
walls of Rooms 192, 193A, 240 and 242 over the next several weeks.
Construction in Room 193A will begin Monday 10/22.
Dupont Physics Wing
- The temporary platform at the connector to Cornell will be
replaced in early November with a more permanent structure. This
work will be timed to occur during hours of minimal use.
Rugby Field
- The existing road alongside the Research Annex has been
demolished and the installation of underground utilities is in
progress. The first layer of utilities is complete and backfilling
(covering with soil) is complete.
- Stockpiling of topsoil and fill is complete. Modifications
to the swale will occur within the next two weeks.
- North Quad
- Note the pathways marked with signs and arrows painted on
the ground that lead from Beardsley around to the north entrance
to Dupont.
- A temporary walkway in front of Cornell has been installed
to bypass utility work. Additional exterior lighting is being
planned for this area.
Cornell Library
- The temporary platform at the connector to Dupont will be
replaced in early November with a more permanent structure. This
work will be timed to occur during hours of minimal use.
- The reconstruction of the canopy on the front of the
building is complete.
- A new emergency exit was installed in the north end of the
lower level of Cornell to replace the exit doors that were taken
out of service on the first floor.
PEDESTRIAN / VEHICULAR ACCESS:
- There will be minor roadwork associated with the
installation of a 12 water main in the service drive to
Beardsley. The work will start on October 22nd and last one week.
Please contact Facilities to coordinate any critical deliveries to
Beardsley in the next 2 weeks.
- Parking along Whittier Place is prohibited during the hours
of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Electrical work inside the manhole in the Hicks lot is
continuing.
- The temporary sidewalk between Martin and Cornell will be
restored in the next week.
NOISE, VIBRATION, DUST, ODORS
- Excavation at the service drive over the next two weeks
will create some dust in the immediate area.
- The balance of the bulk excavation in front of Cornell will
resume this week and will create some noise and dust.
DELIVERIES / HEAVY EQUIPMENT:
- Two manholes will be delivered in the next two weeks. Both
manholes will be installed east of the Research Annex.
- Construction office trailers will be delivered in the next
23 weeks. The trailers will displace faculty/staff parking along
the north face of Dupont, and will be fed by utility connections
from Dupont. The trailers will serve as Barclay Whites field
office for the duration of the project. Faculty and staff who
normally park in these spaces are asked to use the Dupont and
Rugby field lots. The reconfiguration of the Dupont lot and the
sizing of the Rugby field lot anticipated the loss of these
parking spaces.
