Construction
Update as of June 21, 2002
Period 20 June to 4 July
2002
UTILITY SHUTDOWNS:
- There will be a shut-down of the campus chilled water loop
from 10 p.m. Friday, June 28th through Sunday morning, June 30th
so that piping to the new Chiller plant can be tied in. A
faculty-staff email with preliminary information about the
shutdown was issued 6/13. More detail will follow.
WORK AREAS:
Cornell Library
- The second floor of the library remains in operation on the
west side of the temporary wall. Roofing over existing Cornell is
nearly complete. A temporary wall was installed on the first floor
so that the existing glass wall could be removed. A new sprinkler
system is being installed throughout the library and is expected
to be complete by July 15. The work has not closed the library and
is occurring during the hours of 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday
through Friday. At the end of July, the penthouse will be complete
and the temporary wall on the second floor will be relocated
adjacent to the new addition corridor. The book shelves will be
reinstalled and the carrels will be put back in place to prepare
for the new academic year.
Cornell Addition (a.k.a. Biology/ Commons Wing)
- Walls have been framed on the lower level and mechanical
services are being installed on several floors. Installation of
mechanical piping and duct has begun on the first and second
floors. Half of the Commons lower level slab was poured. The
second half of the Commons ground-level floor was also poured.
The slab at the seating area will be formed and poured within the
next two weeks. Existing foundation walls at the Dupont Physics
wing, outside of Room 15, will be sawcut during the week of 7/1.
The work will take several days to complete. Barclay White will
coordinate the hours of this work with the Physics & Astronomy
Department.
Chiller Plant
- Erection of the brick veneer is complete. Duct and pipe
installation is in progress. The cooling towers were delivered and
set. The granite veneer for the south wall will be delivered on
June 26th and will installed over the following three weeks.
Chemistry Wing
- Erection of the connecting canopy and 80 seat Lecture Hall
steel is in progress. Metal deck installation at the Chemistry
wing is 99% complete.
SITEWORK:
- Chilled water piping is being installed underground from a
connection point south of Trotter Hall, north along the east side
of Beardsley Hall, to a connection point at the end of Whittier
Place during the next 7 weeks. Pedestrian traffic will be
re-routed around the work area.
- Chiller water piping is also being installed across the
project site. The work has extended out under the construction
fence and will connect into existing piping in the service drive.
The work area is enclosed in orange snow fence.
PEDESTRIAN / VEHICULAR ACCESS:
- The sidewalk along the east side of Beardsley will be closed
to pedestrians in approximately 3 weeks for a period of 4 - 5
weeks while the chilled water lines are installed. The entrance to
Beardsley will be usable in case of an emergency. The North Quad
entrance to Beardsley will remain open.
- There will be more truck deliveries of structural steel early
next week. Deliveries of concrete block, reinforcing steel and
stone will be on-going.
- Parking along Whittier Place is prohibited during the hours of
7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- The construction work force will increase further during the
summer due to other projects on north campus. Thank you for your
cooperation in respecting the areas designated as Construction
Parking by using the rugby and Dupont parking lots.
NOISE, VIBRATION, DUST, ODORS
- There will be some noise from delivery trucks, a crane and
saws throughout this period. The noise is not expected to be
disruptive to nearby buildings.
- Expect some noise and vibration under the Physics Department
offices while the foundations are cut during the week of July
1st.
- Expect deliveries of structural steel, reinforcing steel,
concrete and masonry throughout this period.
- There will be some dust generated by the on-going trenching
for the chilled water lines.
