Construction
Update as of June 6, 2002
Period 6 thru 20 June
2002
UTILITY SHUTDOWNS:
- There are no utility shut-downs planned for this period.
WORK AREAS:
Cornell Library
- The second floor of the library remains in operation on the
west side of the temporary wall. Roofing over existing Cornell is
nearly complete. A temporary wall was installed on the first floor
so that the existing glass wall could be removed. A new sprinkler
system will be installed throughout the library over the next 4 6
weeks. The work will not close the library and will typically
occur during the hours of 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through
Friday. At the end of July, the penthouse will be complete and
the temporary wall on the second floor will be relocated adjacent
to the new addition corridor. The book shelves will be reinstalled
and the carrels will be put back in place to prepare for the new
academic year.
Cornell Addition (a.k.a. Biology/ Commons Wing)
- Walls have been framed on the lower level and mechanical
services are being installed. Installation of mechanical piping
and duct has begun on the second floor. Sprayed-on fireproofing
was applied to steel columns and beams. One floor of the elevator
shaft in the Commons area was poured. The Commons lower level slab
will be poured early next week. The second half of the Commons
ground-level floor is being formed and will be poured late next
week. The slab at the seating area will be formed and poured
within the next two weeks. Existing foundation walls at the
Dupont Physics wing, outside of Room 15, will be sawcut during the
week of 6/17 or 6/24. The work will take several days to
complete.
Chiller Plant
- Erection of the block back-up wall is near complete and the
brick veneer is in progress. Duct and pipe installation is in
progress. The cooling towers will be delivered and set next
week.
Chemistry Wing
- Foundations are nearly complete at the 80 seat Lecture Hall.
Erection of the connecting canopy and 80 seat Lecture Hall steel
will start on June 10th. Metal deck installation at the Chemistry
wing is 66% complete.
SITEWORK:
- Chilled water piping will be installed underground from a
connection point south of Trotter Hall, north along the east side
of Beardsley Hall, to a connection point at the end of Whittier
Place during the next 8 weeks. Pedestrian traffic will be
re-routed around the work area.
- Chiller water piping is also being installed across the
project site. The work will extend out under the construction
fence and connect into existing piping in the service drive. The
area will be enclosed in orange snow fence.
PEDESTRIAN / VEHICULAR ACCESS:
- The sidewalk along the east side of Beardsley will be closed
to pedestrians in approximately 3 weeks for a period of 4 5 weeks
while the chilled water lines are installed. The entrance to
Beardsley will be usable in case of an emergency.
- Permanent speed bumps were installed on Whittier Place on June
3rd and 4th.
- There will be more truck deliveries of structural steel during
the next two weeks. The cooling towers will be delivered next
week. Deliveries of concrete block, reinforcing steel and stone
will be on-going.
- Paving repairs at the entrance to the Dupont Visitors
Lot where it connects to the service drive have been
completed.
- Parking along Whittier Place is prohibited during the hours
of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- The construction work force is getting larger. Thank you for
your cooperation in respecting the areas designated as
Construction Parking by using the rugby and Dupont parking
lots.
NOISE, VIBRATION, DUST, ODORS
- There will be some noise from concrete trucks, a crane and
saws throughout this period. The noise is not expected to be
disruptive to occupants of nearby buildings.
- There will be some dust generated by the on-going trenching
for the chilled water lines and the generally dry conditions.
