Construction
Update as of July 8, 2002
Period 5 thru 18 July
2002
UTILITY SHUTDOWNS:
- No major shutdowns are planned in the next two weeks.
WORK AREAS:
Cornell Library
- The second floor of the library remains in operation on the
west side of the temporary wall. Roofing over existing Cornell is
nearly complete. The new sprinkler system installation is
continuing throughout the library and is expected to be complete
by July 15. The work has not closed the library and is occurring
during the hours of 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. At
the end of July, the penthouse will be complete and the temporary
wall on the second floor will be relocated adjacent to the new
addition corridor. The book shelves will be reinstalled and the
carrels will be put back in place to prepare for the new academic
year. Installation of the new skylights will start in two
weeks.
Cornell Addition (a.k.a. Biology/ Commons Wing)
- Walls have been framed on the ground level and mechanical
services are being installed on all floors. Installation of
mechanical piping and duct is continuing on the first and second
floors. Two remaining Commons concrete columns and the top of the
elevator shaft are scheduled to be poured in the next two weeks.
The slab at the seating area in the 200-seat lecture hall is
formed and will be poured within the next two weeks. Existing
foundation walls at the Dupont Physics wing, outside of Room 15,
will be sawcut during the week of 7/8. The work will take several
days to complete. Barclay White will coordinate the hours of this
work with the Physics & Astronomy Department.
Chiller Plant
- Erection of the granite veneer is set to start within a week.
Duct and pipe installation is in progress. The cooling towers are
being piped. Delivery of the first chiller is expected before the
end of the month.
Chemistry Wing
- Steel erection is substantially completed. Metal deck
installation is in progress at the 80-seat lecture hall area.
SITEWORK:
- Chilled water piping is being installed underground from a
connection point south of Trotter Hall, north along the east side
of Beardsley Hall, to a connection point at the end of Whittier
Place during the next 7 weeks. Pedestrian traffic will be
re-routed around the work area.
- Chilled water piping was installed across the project site.
Two additional trenches will be cut to complete sanitary and data
line tie-ins outside the construction fence. The work area is
enclosed in orange snow fence.
PEDESTRIAN / VEHICULAR ACCESS:
- The sidewalk along the east side of Beardsley will be closed
to pedestrians in approximately 1 week for a period of 4 - 5 weeks
while the chilled water lines are installed. The entrance to
Beardsley will be usable in case of an emergency. The North Quad
entrance to Beardsley will remain open.
- Deliveries of concrete block, reinforcing steel, concrete and
stone will be on-going.
- Parking along Whittier Place is prohibited during the hours of
7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- The construction work force has increased due to other
projects on north campus. Thank you for your cooperation in
respecting the areas designated as Construction Parking by using
the rugby and Dupont parking lots.
NOISE, VIBRATION, DUST, ODORS
- There will be some noise from delivery trucks and saws
throughout this period. The noise is not expected to be disruptive
to nearby buildings.
- Expect some noise and vibration under the Physics Department
offices while the foundations are cut during the week of July
8th.
- Expect deliveries of reinforcing steel, concrete and masonry
throughout this period to generate dust on-site.
- There will be some dust generated by the on-going trenching
for the chilled water lines at Beardsley.
